Khlong Saen Saeb is one of Bangkok’s most infamous rivers, primarily because of its smell. My inspiration for this piece comes from the issue of and threat to the environment, specifically water pollution. Water pollution happens because Thai people litter and dump chemicals into the river, and this has become a serious problem, since it is harming aquatic animals, making the water extremely contaminated. This painting is a scene of Khlong Saen Saeb at dawn, when it was once clean and serene. Dawn represents a new start, calm and fresh, but the painting is wrapped with a garbage bag. The bag symbolizes the trash that was dumped into the river, harming the environment and blocking the beautiful scene of the river. It is meant to be distracting because it blocks the painting and only some parts are showing. I use gold leaves in the painting to show how invaluable the environment is, but it seems like people throw it away and pollute the water in the process. This represents as a mirror line for the people who no matter how much they really want to see the painting, it is blocked with trash, just like the environment that is blocked away from the pollution that harms the environment.
